dairy queen, glenroy
/Located in the centre of Glenroy, there is a bustling café known as the Dairy Queen. Despite its name, it is not associated with the well-known ice cream chain, and there is no ice cream on display. However, they do offer tasty milkshakes and it is definitely worth a visit.
This particular Dairy Queen boasts the motto "Give me coffee and no one gets hurt", proudly displayed in bright red neon above their coffee machine. Fortunately, Mamma has only ever had good coffee there, which is a testament to their safety practices. In addition to their coffee, they also serve a huge selection of food, ranging from quick takeaway bites to sit-down breakfasts and lunches. It's no wonder that this beloved local cafe, which has been in operation since the mid-1940s, remains a popular destination.
Owned and run by the same family since 1986, this place is and feels very child-friendly, with several high chairs available. The staff at the restaurant were incredibly accommodating. Mamma and little Mr 0.9 were happy, messy and loud but felt completely at ease.
Mamma and the crew opted for the scrumptious chicken and avocado salad, we enjoyed the cooked breakfast and the $20 parma meal deal which we think was one of the best parma we have eaten in years – which for a Victorian is high praise indeed. There is also freshly squeezed juice which is brought out fresh and fast – just as Mamma likes them.
The venue unfortunately does not have toilets or changing facilities however, there are toilets located around the corner.
Many locals remember this place as a cool spot to hang out during their teenage years. Even now, it remains a beloved destination for people from all over. Although you may have to wait a little for a table in this busy café, it is definitely worth it.
