fire services museum, east melbourne
/Attention all emergency services appreciators!
The Fire Services Museum of Victoria is located in the original headquarters of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and is chock full of fire-fighting memorabilia from Victoria, Australia and overseas. There is so much to see: old-fashioned breathing masks, smoke jackets, an original fire pole (complete with firemen mannequins), uniforms, medals, portraits, fire-fighting apparatuses, audio/visual anecdotes and of course - most importantly - vintage fire engines!
The museum has collected and restored several historic fire fighting vehicles over the years. Amongst others, there is a hand drawn (yes, that means the fire fighters carried it!) 40-feet escape ladder cart, a ‘fire horse’ - drawn manual pumper (complete with replica horses) and a “Dennis” Pumper truck where kids can jump on the back to try on some fire fighting jackets and helmets – a great photo opportunity!
The museum is run by volunteers – most of whom are passionate ex-fire-fighters, each with a unique personal history and a story or 2 to share! There is a gift shop at the front selling memorabilia for the young and old.
Demonstrations also run regularly so you can see some cool stuff like a mock search and rescue or a demo of how a car is cut open. Click here to enquire about upcoming events. .
Mamma special mention: If you’re keen to keep adventuring, check out Carlton Gardens (outdoor weather) or the Melbourne Museum (indoor weather!)
