monsalvat, eltham
/Walking into the wonderland that is Montsalvat feels a bit like you're walking into an ancient village - part magical kingdom, part monastery. It was actually founded and built in the 30's by Justus Jörgensen and was always an artists colony - and still is, with a few artists still living on the premises.
Montsalvat is a treasure trove of nooks and crannies, with awe-inspiring buildings at every turn. As the staff will tell you, if a door is open, you are welcome to enter, so get ready to explore! But what truly sets this place apart is the chance to encounter the resident peacocks. These majestic creatures add a touch of whimsy and wonder to your visit.
The cafe is currently closed, but you can bring a picnic and hang out on the lawn, or Mamma might like to enjoy a drink at the wine bar, which is open from 2 to 7 p.m. on Fridays.
Mamma says this place is unsuitable for prams, but you can do an outer circuit with a pram if you need to - remember, many wobbly stairways take you from one place to the next, which is all part of the fun.
Art pieces and artisan workshops are scattered throughout the property—it's best to check their website for the most up-to-date information.
Mamma’s Special mentions: Before heading to Montsalvat, grab a picnic lunch from one of Mamma’s favourite northside eats.
