yan yean reservoir, yan yean

Just a short drive from Doreen, this hidden gem offers a playground, lookout point, and expansive picnic areas set against a tranquil reservoir backdrop.

As you make your way down the quiet road, you’ll discover plenty of unshaded picnic tables and a few rotundas, perfect for birthday parties or larger gatherings. Nearby, a wetlands area provides a shady retreat for summer picnics. Ample parking is available throughout the park. At the end of the road, a hilltop car park features a picnic area with stunning reservoir views and conveniently located toilet facilities.

A paved walking trail links the playground to the lookout point, offering scenic views of the reservoir. However, due to a steep hill along the trail, it’s best to park at the playground carpark if you’re bringing a pram and plan to stop for a play.

Next to the playground is a site featuring the historic Valve House, part of the area’s oldest water supply system, and the Caretaker’s Cottage, which can be visited by arranging a tour through Parks Victoria.

For young birdwatchers, the extensive wetlands are a must-visit. Pack the binoculars to spot the diverse birdlife that thrives in this habitat. Keep an eye out for other wildlife too, such as bunnies, as you explore.
