nangak tamboree (formerly la trobe) wildlife sanctuary, bundoora
/Just under an hour from Melbourne’s CBD, you’ll discover an oasis for native wildlife nestled within the bustling heart of Bundoora. If you choose the self-guided walk, there are two scenic trail options. Managed by La Trobe University, the sanctuary offers an outback experience, surrounded by tall gum trees, paperbarks, native shrubs, and other local plants. Along the trail, you'll spot nesting boxes, perfect for observing bird activity, which the little ones especially love. As you walk, listen to the hum of bees, the laughter of kookaburras, and the rustling leaves; you might just catch sight of a skink darting under the foliage.
The sanctuary is also home to resident emus, a friendly bunch indeed. On our visit, two of them wandered over from the bush to greet us, definitely a memorable and eye-opening experience for Mamma and her family to see these gentle creatures up close. We were also lucky enough to watch kookaburras flying back and forth to tree hollows, food in their beaks, as they fed their chirping chicks calling out from their nests.
Plus, we spotted a pair of baby possums in their nest, close enough to watch their activities inside. This walk is relaxing and a wonderful way to connect with nature. Just remember to bring sunscreen and a sunhat, as shade is sparse along the path and you'll need to stick to the designated trail.
